In The Community - Ways to Get Engaged

With Movember at an end and December now in full swing, it is often a time of joy as well as a time to reflect on what can one person do to give back/pay it forward. Here are just a few ideas:

Volunteer: With the holiday season approaching there are a number of local organizations looking for volunteers to help them run their holiday events and campaigns. Consider the following:

Become a Board Member: Have a passion for something and want to get engaged in your community? Consider joining the board of directors at one of your local non-profit organizations. Community non-profits serve the needs of local residents in all areas of daily life from food security, to parenting, to restorative justice, to youth mental health, to children with disabilities, to seniors, to... the list can go on.

Non-profits are always looking for business leaders looking to help them realize their mandate. Intrigued? Do some research about local non profits and see who is doing work that interests you. Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Services Volunteer Centre has a database of local and regional non-profits with volunteer opportunities. It's a great place to start the conversation. Donate:

  • Christmas Hamper Society - sponsor a family through the good neighbour program

  • Friends in Need Food Bank - food, personal hygiene items. For their donations wish list click: donations

  • BC SPCA - help our furry friends by donating towels, pet food and/or take your empty bottles, milk cartons etc to Changes Recycle Centre associated with Save-On Foods and request the funds be credited to the BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch

  • Canadian Blood Services – contact Canadian Blood Services to reserve your spot for December 16th blood donation. 'It’s in you to give'.

Or, maybe it is time to let go of items that are providing you with joy but are in great condition. Consider donating to:

  • Cythera - The net proceeds from the sale of items that are sold in our store to the general public will go towards funding and sustaining programs that are specifically designed for women and children experiencing violence and abuse.

  • Big Brothers - The profit of your donation helps match children with mentors.

Whether it be a one-time event or you are ready to commit to something ongoing have a look at: http://www.govolunteer.ca/volunteer-opportunities to see many more options.

Thank you for whatever you decide to give; your time, talent or treasures!
